Heart Myth or Fact #22: You can eat whatever you want if you take statins

Statins are drugs used to lower cholesterol. They can help prevent a heart attack by preventing plaque to rupture. They also make blood vessels more flexible. However, most people that are prescribed statins, are first suggested to modify their lifestyle. That means diet, exercise, and the end of smoking if they do.

The lifestyle change should be continued even if statins are prescribed. As we’ve seen with all of the previous Heart Myths, heart disease is the result of a variety of factors. Eating a diet in high cholesterol puts your heart at risk and if you are on statins, can be counter-productive to the medication.
