Heart Myth or Fact #16: Diabetes is not a heart threat as long as blood sugar levels are normal


Those with diabetes are healthiest when their blood sugar levels are within a normal range. However, diabetes itself causes inflammation that can damage blood vessels. This in turn raises the risk of heart disease along with other health problems.

If you have diabetes, keeping your sugar levels controlled is definitely a good thing. Unfortunately this alone will not prevent heart problems. Just like everyone else your weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol all need to be taken into account.
