New studies show that consuming foods and drinks high in fructose sugar can significantly increase your risks for high blood pressure. Fructose, including the syrups made from corn used to sweeten beverages, baked goods and other processed foods, can make blood vessels contract leading to an increase in blood pressure.
High blood pressure can lead to heart disease and kidney disease. In order to decrease your risk of high blood pressure, it is recommended that you cut down on sugary foods and drinks. The study found that participants who who had 74 grams of fructose a day, which is about 2.5 sugary drinks, had a 28% increased risk of higher blood pressure! According to the American Heart Association,
“Too much sugar of any kind not only makes people fatter, but is also a key culprit in diabetes, heart disease and stroke”
Sugary soft drinks are a major contributor to Americans’ diets, and cutting back on these types of drinks can help to reduce your blood pressure. In fact, a recent study shows that consuming just one less sugary drink a day can help to considerably lower your blood pressure!
